Federal Release Paths
The Federal Bureau of Prisons is a nationwide prison system, not a DeKalb County jail or local facility. No BOP prison was identified in the county. Its locator covers federal prisoners from 1982 to the present and some earlier historical records. A result may show “Released” with a date or indicate that the person is not in BOP custody. That is a BOP event only.
A person arrested in DeKalb County may pass through several custodians. The regional jail can hold or transfer someone. The U.S. Marshals Service can manage and transport a federal defendant before and during court proceedings. BOP custody generally follows federal commitment. ICE custody is a separate civil immigration system. A handoff between them is not automatically community release.
| System | What it can establish |
|---|---|
| Regional jail | Exit or transfer from Pattonsburg custody |
| USMS | Federal pretrial or court-stage custody |
| BOP | Federal prison custody and many release dates |
| ICE | Current or recent immigration detention within locator limits |
Search BOP Release Results
Open the BOP Inmate Locator. A federal register number provides the strongest match. The locator also accepts BOP Register, DCDC, FBI, or INS numbers and offers a name search with age, race, and sex descriptors. Do not match a common name without checking every available identifier.
- Choose the federal-number search when an official identifier is known.
- Otherwise enter the exact name and narrow with the displayed descriptors.
- Open the matching result and record the exact custody wording and release date.
- Check the federal court docket when the status or sentence path remains unclear.
- Check another custodian if the result only says the person is not held by BOP.
The official BOP locator released-result format appears below.

The image shows why the federal status and date must stay tied to BOP rather than being reused as proof of a regional-jail, Missouri prison, or ICE release.
Read Federal Release Language
“Released” commonly reports completion of the BOP custody event shown by the locator. “Not in BOP custody” is broader. It may reflect release to the community, completion of BOP custody, transfer to another sovereign, a defendant not yet received from USMS pretrial custody, or a record outside the locator’s coverage. It does not rule out county, state, immigration, or other federal custody.
A halfway house or community-corrections phase also needs care. A person can live outside a prison while legal BOP custody continues. The locator date should be paired with the federal docket, sentence information, and any identified residential reentry placement. Do not translate a place change into final discharge.
- Released
- A BOP record status tied to the listed federal event and date.
- Not in BOP custody
- A limited statement that does not locate every other form of custody.
- Transfer
- A handoff to another custodian, not proof of freedom.
- USMS
- The federal agency managing many prisoners before and during court proceedings.
USMS Federal Custody Limits
The U.S. Marshals Service prisoner information explains its role in managing and transporting federal prisoners during court proceedings. USMS does not provide a general public historical-release search equivalent to the BOP locator. A defendant may therefore be in federal custody without appearing as a current BOP prisoner.
If the Daviess/DeKalb Regional Jail record names USMS, obtain the federal case number and inspect the federal docket. Determine whether the person moved to another contract jail, entered BOP after sentencing, or left under a federal court order. The regional-jail record proves only its own handoff. The federal court and next custodian establish what followed.
Ask for the date, transfer category, receiving agency, and any releasable movement details. A missing BOP result should not be treated as a release confirmation when the federal case remains at the pretrial stage.
ICE Release Search Distinctions
ICE’s Online Detainee Locator System is separate from BOP. Search by A-number plus country of birth, or by exact biographical information. Add leading zeroes when needed to make a nine-digit A-number. The locator omits people under 18. It can include current detainees and people released from ICE custody during the preceding 60 days.
That recent coverage does not make ODLS a dependable historical release ledger. A no-result may mean release, transfer, a data delay, a short stay not displayed, or a mismatch. ICE’s information line is 888-351-4024, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern. Use it only when necessary after checking identifiers and the locator.
An ICE detainer is not a criminal sentence. If the regional jail releases someone to ICE, the county event is a transfer. Any later immigration-custody release must be confirmed separately. No official evidence identified the regional jail as a dedicated ICE detention center or showed a current public DeKalb County ICE detention contract.
Federal Records and Court Fallback
The BOP locator is useful but not a full movement file. Preserve the register number, exact result, date shown, and access date. For a federal sentence, the federal docket can supply the judgment and later orders. For a local-to-federal transfer, request the regional jail’s release or transfer record with the booking number, out date and time, authority, destination, and receiving agency.
When a BOP record needs clarification, use BOP’s official contact and records channels. Ask for the precise releasable record, not a new narrative. Federal privacy and records rules may limit personal details. For court records, use the correct federal district docket. For an ICE event, use ICE rather than asking BOP to interpret immigration custody.

DeKalb Federal Transfer Meaning
Daviess/DeKalb Regional Jail serves as the physical local jail for DeKalb County. Its exit entry may name USMS, ICE, MODOC, another county, bond, or another authority. Only bond, sentence completion, or a comparable lawful community-release category supports a claim that the person left confinement at that stage. USMS or ICE wording signals another custody question.
Case.net covers Missouri state cases, while a federal prosecution requires the federal docket. One person can have both. Record the case number and sovereign before comparing dates. A state dismissal does not resolve a federal matter, and a federal BOP release date does not resolve a separate Missouri hold.
MOVANS may report a local jail status change, but it is notification rather than the archived federal record. Keep the jail booking number, federal register number, A-number, and court case number distinct. Do not republish sensitive identifiers.
DeKalb Facility History Boundary
DeKalb’s local facility map contains no federal prison. Its unusual history instead involves a two-county regional jail district and two Cameron state-corrections names. Daviess and DeKalb formed the regional jail district and opened the Pattonsburg jail in 2006. MODOC later moved state-prison operations back to Crossroads in 2022 and converted the former Western Missouri Correctional Center into a training academy.
Those local and state histories matter because search results can place “DeKalb,” “Cameron,” “WMCC,” “CRCC,” and a federal agency on the same screen. None converts the academy or regional jail into a BOP institution. The regional jail history identifies the local district, while BOP’s locator remains the proper federal-prison source.
A federal detainer or USMS pickup at a local jail describes authority and movement. It does not create a federal facility in the county. Follow the person’s actual custody chain.
Confirm a Federal Release Date
Start with the BOP locator date, but treat it as one agency’s event. Compare the federal judgment and later docket orders. Check whether community corrections continued legal custody. If a regional-jail record preceded the federal case, confirm the handoff. If ICE followed BOP, search the immigration system within its limits.
Record source, access time, identifier type, exact wording, and the agency responsible for the date. Name-only matches are weak. A missing result is not affirmative proof. The best conclusion may be narrow: the person is reported released from BOP on the displayed date, while another system’s status remains unconfirmed.
Note: No BOP or ICE detention facility was identified in DeKalb County during the official-source review.
