Academy Has No Release Path
The Academy for Excellence in Corrections is a Missouri Department of Corrections staff-training campus at the former Western Missouri Correctional Center site. It does not currently house inmates. It therefore has no present inmate roster, release desk, inmate locator, release schedule, or booking record.
An old result that says “Western Missouri Correctional Center” can still be valid for the date it describes. The error occurs when that historical name is treated as a current prison or when the Academy is presented as the agency that releases people today. MODOC retains responsibility for the historical custody and release record.
The facility distinction also protects against a false absence. A person not found at the Academy has not been shown to be released. The campus has no inmate population to search. Current MODOC status, past-offender data, and a movement history answer the actual question.
Identify Former WMCC Records
Begin with the date on the source. A prison document, court docket, news report, or MODOC entry created while WMCC operated should keep that historical institution name. Next, locate the DOC number. It is the strongest link across an institutional rename, a move to CRCC, community supervision, and final discharge.
- Record the exact historical facility wording and date. Do not silently replace WMCC in a quoted or dated source.
- Match the person through the DOC number whenever possible. Use name, county, court case, and sentence only as supporting identity checks.
- Search the active MODOC system to determine whether the person is now incarcerated or supervised.
- If no active result appears, use the nightly Sunshine offender file, which covers people who are or have been under MODOC supervision.
- Request a MODOC movement or release history when the sequence between WMCC, CRCC, another prison, supervision, and discharge must be established.
A current correctional-center assignment means state prison custody. A field-office assignment means community supervision. Neither should be converted into a claim about the Academy. When the full custody path crosses local jail and state systems, the DeKalb County released inmate search keeps those custodians separate.
Use CRCC for Academy Custody Checks
Crossroads Correctional Center is the current state prison in Cameron. MODOC lists it as maximum and medium security. A person presently assigned there belongs in the statewide offender search, not in a county jail roster and not in an Academy search.
The MODOC active Offender Search covers people currently incarcerated or under supervision. Search by DOC number first. Open the matching record and read status, assignment, sentence, county, and any public parole or conditional-release information. A person released from prison to supervision may still appear because the sentence is active.
A movement from WMCC to CRCC, or from CRCC to another MODOC prison, is a transfer. It is not community release. The assignment and movement record should identify the institution that received the person. Current CRCC release verification is covered on the Crossroads Correctional Center release-record page.
Trace Past WMCC Release Records
A fully discharged former WMCC resident may not appear in the active search. MODOC’s nightly Sunshine offender database is the better historical starting point because it includes people who are or have been under department supervision. Download its current data layout and code tables with the file.
| Record element | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| DOC number | Connects the same person across facility names, assignments, and supervision periods. |
| Status and assignment codes | Distinguish institutional custody, field supervision, discharge, and other documented states. |
| County and court case | Link the corrections record to the sentence and judgment. |
| Sentence fields | Supply sentence start, length, and documented calculations. |
| Parole or conditional-release fields | Identify supervised-release concepts when documented. |
| Movement or release history | Shows which institution ended custody, the next assignment, and the event date. |
The data dictionary’s `$PC` field is “Sentence-I Minimum Release Date,” a calculated minimum date on an active sentence. It is not proof of the date the person physically left WMCC, CRCC, or any other prison. Use the movement record for the historical event.
Codes can change with a new file layout. Preserve the download date and use the matching dictionary. Do not translate a code from memory or report a calculated date as guaranteed.
Request Former WMCC Records
Historical inmate records should be requested from MODOC, not from Academy training staff. Identify the former resident by full name and DOC number when available. State the approximate WMCC custody dates and ask for the exact record needed, such as institutional assignments, movement history, release category, supervision period, or final discharge date.
The MODOC Sunshine page publishes custodians for state records. The research identifies `OD.SunshineRequest@doc.mo.gov` for the Office of Director and `ParoleBoard.SunshineRequest@doc.mo.gov` for Parole Board material. Route the request to the custodian that made or holds the record.
MODOC treats several status facts as public, including present offense, sentence and judgment, county, supervision term, confirmation of supervision, supervising officer and office, custody or bond status, parole or conditional-release date, board release decision, and prior convictions. Other case-management, medical, victim, treatment, or security information may remain confidential.
Ask for an electronic response and an estimate before fees exceed a chosen cap. If a field is withheld, request the legal basis and all reasonably separable open material. Avoid sending a Social Security number through an unconfirmed channel. A DOC number and case information usually provide a safer match.
Academy Campus Record Boundary
The current campus identity is the Academy for Excellence in Corrections, former Western Missouri Correctional Center. The research places it at 609 East Pence Road in Cameron. No current inmate-release contact, inmate phone line, release hours, or roster is supported because the campus does not house inmates.

Use the address only to distinguish the campus from CRCC at a different East Pence Road address. Do not send a former-offender release request there merely because an old document names WMCC. MODOC records custodians hold the historical path, while CRCC handles current institutional routing.
A contact detail absent from the research should not be guessed. Current Academy administrative information can be checked through MODOC, but the request must still be routed according to record ownership.
How WMCC Records Became Academy Records
MODOC’s official Cameron facility history documents the unusual sequence. CRCC operations were consolidated into Western Missouri Correctional Center in 2019. In 2022, MODOC moved the population and staff back into the smaller Crossroads facility and converted the former WMCC campus into the Academy for Excellence in Corrections.
This history explains why two nearby names can appear in one person’s record. The historical WMCC reference may be accurate for custody before the change. CRCC is the current prison identity. The Academy name describes the later training use and should not be projected backward onto a prison-era document.
The same rule works in reverse. A current search result should not call the Academy “WMCC” as though it remained an operating prison. Preserve the record’s date, cite the facility name used at that time, and add the current status only when MODOC supports it.
Correct WMCC Release Facility Errors
A correction begins by separating a historical label from a false present-tense claim. “Held at WMCC in 2020” may describe a valid past assignment. “Currently held at the Academy” is unsupported because the Academy is not an inmate facility. Quote the disputed wording and provide the DOC number, source date, and official MODOC history.
Send assignment or movement errors to MODOC. Send judgment or docket errors to the court that created them. A news publisher controls its own caption or article, but the official movement record supplies the correction evidence. One office cannot rewrite another office’s system.
- Historical name
- The official institution label in use during the dated custody event.
- Current name
- The present identity and function of a campus or institution.
- Assignment
- The MODOC institution or field office associated with the person at a given time.
- Movement
- A dated change from one assignment or custody location to another.
If a record is closed or expunged, do not rebuild the event from old copies. Follow the court order and ask each holder what remains lawfully public. A stale mirror should not override an official correction.
Separate Academy Corrections Records
Cameron can appear in prison, training, and supervision records. The location alone does not establish the person’s status. CRCC is the current prison. The Academy is the former WMCC training campus. The District 2 Probation and Parole office is a community-supervision office.
| Cameron name | Function | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Crossroads Correctional Center | Current MODOC prison | An exit could be transfer rather than community release. |
| Academy for Excellence in Corrections | MODOC staff training | It does not indicate current inmate custody. |
| Former WMCC | Historical prison identity | The old name does not describe a current operating prison. |
| District 2 field office | Probation and parole supervision | A field-office assignment is not incarceration. |
Use the full agency name, address, DOC number, record date, and assignment label. That method prevents a former WMCC resident, a current CRCC prisoner, and a person reporting to supervision from being merged into one “Cameron inmate” result.
Note: A facility rename changes present navigation, but it does not erase the historically correct name on a dated MODOC record.
